online networking

You only have one chance to leave a good first impression

Correct use of the internationalStudentsClub can help you develop your career network and expand your horizons. As you regularly network online with employers and colleagues, remember to present yourself at your best by taking the following five recommendations to heart:

1.Your profile should always be up to date. Employers and/or other club members could receive a wrong impression should you not update your personal information or not upload a new photograph. A tip: never use snapshots!

2. Socialize with people from all different areas. Some people make the mistake of filling up their contact list just to impress. However, your presence online should reflect your interest in meeting people who you could also face in real life.

3. Watch the length of your contact list. Having too many online contacts may prompt others to ask if you even have time left for working. On the other hand, a too limited number of contacts may indicate an antisocial attitude or difficulty in interacting with others.

4. Stay in contact with old classmates and colleagues. A lack of contact to people from previous activities may be interpreted by those reviewing your profile as an inability to make and keep friends.

5. Receive (and give) feedback. You may consider online feedback to be unnecessary, but it is an acknowledgement of you as a person and is thus a compliment. It is always a good idea to provide feedback in return in the case that you receive feedback. By so doing, you show respect.
