International Women's Day
Message from Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma

100 years after Clara Zetkin, the pioneering socialist, convinced the world community to declare 8th March as International Women's Day, we are still shamefully failing some of the most dispossessed and disenfranchised people in our societies: women. For every 100 such deaths, 99 are in the developing world, and - within that - 66 in the Commonwealth. Cutbacks in primary health have meant that poor women's access to maternal services has become even more limited.

Home Based Workers Numbers Up by 2 Million
U.S. Census Bureau releases new data

The number of people who worked at home increased by nearly 2 million, from about 9.5 million in 1999 to about 11.3 million in 2005, according to new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. Nearly half of these home workers had college degrees and nearly half of them earned $75,000 a year or more. These figures come from Home-Based Workers in the United States: 1999-2005, a series of tables that describe the type of employment, occupations and characteristics of home-based workers in the United States. The tables examine the total workforce and compare those who work at home with those who do not. The data are produced from a supplement to the Survey of Income and Program Participation.

Improving Recruitment Prospects: Spread Out Your Wings and Fly
Rotating to other functions to broaden the experince in a business

HR professionals have often been stigmatised by the perception that they lack businessnous. Compared with other organisational functions, such as operations, finance or IT, HR has some times not been considered one of the more important functions when it comes to essential parts of a business. One move that HR professionals can sometimes make to broaden their business expertise – as well as their subsequent recruitment and career path prospects – is to move into other functions. David Owens, managing director of HR Partners, suggests that this is a more commonly held aspiration now than it used to be. It was seen as a highly desirable thing to do – particularly by the more ambitious HR professional, he says.

Encouraging Jump of IT Hirings in January
Addition of 12,900 IT jobs an 'encouraging' sign

U.S. IT employment increased by 12,900 jobs, or 0.3%, in January, one of the best month-to-month gains since the recession hit in late 2008, the TechServe Alliance reported today. The positive news comes after the prolonged recession had reduced overall IT employment by some 200,000 jobs, according to the Alexandria, Va.-based IT services industry group, which tracks monthly changes in IT hiring based on its own analysis of U.S. unemployment data.

Study Shows: Many H-1B Workers Get Temporary jobs
U.S. firms have mixed plans

Many employers sponsor H-1B holders to have them fill temporary posts, not to become full-time residents of the U.S., according to a study released last week by the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington-based nonprofit think tank. The differences in the ways companies use H-1B visas can be stark, according to the study, which was authored by Ron Hira, an associate professor of public policy at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a longtime critic of the H-1B visa program.

How a Mistake Crashed Toyota
Toyota’s current predicament is a result of poorly designed practices and weak execution on the part of the human resource department, writes Dr John Sullivan

Unless you have been living off the planet Earth, you have probably already read or heard about several mechanical failures in Toyota automobiles that led the automaker famous for quality to recall nearly nine million cars worldwide. In addition, poor handling of the issue in the public eye has damaged the automaker’s brand reputation and caused sales to fall to their lowest point in more than a decade.

Governments and firms need to do more to tackle the gender equality gap

Governments and firms need to do more to tackle the gender equality gap in OECD countries, according to an OECD report. Even if the share of working women is high on average in OECD countries, with 62% of all women in paid work, women earn almost a fifth less than men. While one out of four women works part-time, only 6% of men do so. These gender differences widen when there are children, since women are more likely to adjust their work patterns than men.
