International Women's Day
Message from Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma

100 years after Clara Zetkin, the pioneering socialist, convinced the world community to declare 8th March as International Women's Day, we are still shamefully failing some of the most dispossessed and disenfranchised people in our societies: women. For every 100 such deaths, 99 are in the developing world, and - within that - 66 in the Commonwealth. Cutbacks in primary health have meant that poor women's access to maternal services has become even more limited.

Gay-Friendly Workplaces Boost Health and Productivity in Companies
Reducing stress and problem factors

Fear of social exclusion and discrimination force many employees to hide their sexual orientation in the workplace, often leading to anxiety and depression, according to Dawn Hough from Pride in Diversity. Speaking in Sydney yesterday at the official launch of Australia’s first LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) inclusion program for the workplace, Hough said that this group of people is often excluded from diversity programs and can be unintentionally discriminated against.

Significant Changes and Differences in Demographic Outlook for BRIC Countries

The demographic outlook for the BRICs varies greatly. The differences in the projected change in the working-age population are very significant in both absolute and relative terms. This will impact not only economic growth prospects, but also savings and investment behaviour and potentially financial market growth prospects. Brazil and India are demographically in a substantially more favourable position than China and Russia. With the exception of India, demographic developments in the BRICs are becoming, or will soon become, a net negative in terms of per-capita growth.

Global high-tech market is growing again
Drivers of growth are the emerging countries of China, India and Brazil

The global market for information and communications technology (ICT) is expected to grow by 1.9 percent to 2.3 trillion euros in 2010, according to the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO), an international market research firm. In the crisis year of 2009, sales fell by as much as 1.6 percent. “The global high-tech markets are recovering appreciably from the economic crisis. Signs are once again pointing toward growth,” said Prof. August-Wilhelm Scheer, president of the German EITO partner association BITKOM, while presenting the data at CeBIT in Hanover. “In the industrial countries, increasingly companies are investing again in modern IT systems." The drivers of growth are the emerging countries of China, India and Brazil, whose high-tech markets have been able to make strong gains in spite of the crisis. “In 2010, the emerging countries will provide additional impetus to the markets,” said Scheer. If the economic recovery continues, the global ICT market will grow by 3.7 percent to 2.4 trillion euros in 2011, according to EITO.

Study Shows: Many H-1B Workers Get Temporary jobs
U.S. firms have mixed plans

Many employers sponsor H-1B holders to have them fill temporary posts, not to become full-time residents of the U.S., according to a study released last week by the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington-based nonprofit think tank. The differences in the ways companies use H-1B visas can be stark, according to the study, which was authored by Ron Hira, an associate professor of public policy at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a longtime critic of the H-1B visa program.

Up Against Psychometric Testing
How can you prepare for them

Psychometric testing refers to an assessment process intended to assist an employer's strategic talent acquisition plan by aligning the organisation's business needs with the employee selection process. The tests are designed to provide objective unbiased insight into a candidate's potential strengths and weaknesses related to aptitudes and personality. Typically, the prospective employer is interested in determining the individual's leadership potential, decision-making ability and general personality traits. The result of a psychometric test is reviewed and considered together with a candidate's resume, personal interview with the employer's recruitment representative and comments received from the candidate's referees.

Many Companies Fail to Build a 'Cash Culture'

The global financial crisis has made cash a major priority for most companies. But according to a new study from REL, a division of The Hackett Group, Inc., many still fail to take the key steps required to build a corporate culture that successfully focuses on cash. REL's research "Blueprint for a Cash Culture" details the key steps companies can take to build a cash culture, and how prevalent they are in companies today. It details best practices in four key areas: organizational alignment and collaboration; executive leadership and sponsorship; measurement and accountability; and incentives and compensation.

Worldwide Differences in Social Mobility

It is easier to climb the social ladder and earn more than one's parents in the Nordic countries, Australia and Canada than in France, Italy, Britain and the United States, according to a new OECD study. But weak social mobility can signal a lack of equal opportunities, constrain productivity and curb economic growth, says a report on the study. "A Family Affair: Intergenerational social mobility across OECD countries" says climbing the social ladder depends on a range of factors such as individual ability, family and social environments, networks and attitudes. But public action - particularly education and to some extent tax policies - can play a key role in helping people achieve a higher income and social status than their parents.
