“Will you be ready to face the future?”

"Today’s economy needs 'One-World' people as managers, people who are not only at home in their own country, but who understand all markets – and that means understanding the world-.” Carl Hahn (1982-1992 Chairman emeritus of the Volkswagen AG)
Not only in the Western world, but also in countries experiencing rapid economic development such as China and India, the demand for highly qualified executives is steadily rising.
Companies and nations have long begun to recruit their high potentials worldwide. During the next decades this emerging global competition will radically change the world since for the first time it will not be competition for goods and services alone, but also for people – the so-called ”creative class“.
The American state of Florida estimated the global creative class to consist of 100 to 150 million individuals. More and more countries, especially the Western and Asian countries, are competing for this elite class. Oftentimes, the US is not the winner anymore and neither is Europe.
But what distinguishes this “creative class”?. What is it that these global talents have to offer and why are they so hard to find?
The fact is that the fusion of worldwide markets is proceeding at an ever quicker pace. Due to the implementation of reforms, countries that until recently were dependent on the support of wealthier nations are experiencing stabile economic growth and are attracting investors from abroad, who create new jobs locally.
The near and off-shoring markets are in constant change. The previously poor off-shoring countries such as India or China are nowadays looking for their own partner countries in which to produce at lower costs.
Nonetheless students worldwide are barely, if at all, aware of these rapid developments of global scale. Many times their educational systems – hopelessly out of date or stemming from regimes with rigidly structured systems that left little room for creative thought – do not adequately prepare them for the demands of the business world today. Their perspective is national – rarely international.
Despite government measures supporting study abroad, very few students actually do so. What’s more, many students either see no use in doing traineeships and/or otherwise becoming engaged off campus during their studies or their demanding curriculum hinders them from doing so.
The consequence is that the „global talents“, the (future) leading executives, those mastering several languages, having excellent degrees, who spent time abroad and did internships, remain a minority. They are a minority in high demand, for whom companies worldwide have entered into competition.
Nowadays, it is no longer enough to address this minority on a national level because it is precisely this clientele who, for its part, is going international. They are the modern job-nomads, who – having already been abroad – are no longer so strongly rooted to their country and are therefore willing to conquer the international job markets and accept employment there where conditions are best.

Multinationals are competing with local businesses for scarce executive talent. |

From a recruiting-perspective, the increasing importance of soft skills, cultural fitness, and the ability to work in a team makes candidate selection process a very difficult task. Companies and agencies can no longer simply rely on the „checklist-method“ of recruiting.
Moreover, companies must develop an integrated recruiting method that matches the individual requirements. It is important that employers build up a rational balance between the short-term talent search and the medium to long-term business-intern development.
